A Leader’s Results Come From Decisions Made And Options Taken – 4 Examples

Although we often hear someone in a position of leadership claim something was beyond their control, and they couldn’t do anything about it, the reality is that in the vast majority of circumstances, their results (and thus, their destiny or fate) are dependent upon the choices they make, and the options they take. In my over three decades of involvement in leadership, from identifying, qualifying, training, developing, and consulting to more than a thousand individuals in some position of leadership (either actual or potential), I have determined that it is nearly always how someone proceeds, considers and behaves/ acts, that creates and impacts their results.1. Marketing and advertising: Care must be taken to use a balanced approach, in these two areas. There is no such thing as a one – size – fits – all approach, but rather, wise leaders evaluate and analyze their options, with an open – mind, and determine how to proceed. The options include traditional, digital/ social, and a combination/ multi – faceted approach. Wise leaders avoid the tendency to only use one of these methodologies, but use the combination, or nuanced approach to marketing and advertising. The traditional approach includes snail – mail, postcard advertising, and other media, as well as face – to – face, and telephoning. The digital/ social method includes Social Media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, etc., as well as eblasts, texts, email, etc. The reason to proceed in a more balanced way, is that most constituencies include members of a variety of generations, backgrounds, interests and priorities, and only by using all available modalities, does it become possible to maximize effectiveness. Remember that some people pay more attention to one of these ways, than others, and that what is commonly referred to as the Rule of Eight, states most people must hear information a minimum of eight times (albeit masked in a different method), to truly learn, understand and remember.2. Status Quo, or Change: It is generally better to proceed in an original way, than merely as a carbon – copy, of others. However, when a leader proceeds with a keen, historical perspective and understanding, combined with a willingness to tweak, evolve, and be relevant, he optimizes his possibilities. While changes are often essential, how those changes (as well as what not to change) must be considered carefully, and thus avoid, the Throw the baby out with the bath water method.3. Evolutionary or Revolutionary: The evolutionary approach proceeds from the perspective of doing things in a carefully crafted, non – threatening, tweaking and step – by – step preference. Groups must evolve to remain relevant! On the other hand, revolutionary leadership is much more radical in scope, and is often only appropriate as a last – ditch effort. While drastic changes might be needed, a great leader pursues the way that gives him the best chance of implementation, etc.4. Flexibility or Rigid: A leader must examine each position he takes, and determine whether he has any degree of wiggle – room, or space for compromise, and when he must draw a line in the sand. Don’t be too quick to compromise, for compromise – sake, but rather, seek unity, and getting the best results. This is another area where there is often a need to avoid either extreme!Great leaders keep their alternatives/ options open, and carefully analyze their choices, as well as potential ramifications. A true leader must develop real wisdom, based on attaining knowledge and judgment!
